Session II: February 21

Great End of the Church #2: Preserving truth.

In 1 Corinthians, Paul writes, “We preach Christ crucified.”  This is the truth that has defined the church from its beginning, and it is this truth that the church is called to preserve throughout the ages.  Over time, the way we articulate truth may change, and Christians may not always agree on the meaning of the truth, but the church has been entrusted with the truth of God in Christ, recorded by men in Scripture, and we are given the sacred task of preserving it.  Paul also writes that we must speak the truth in love (Ephesians 4:15), recognizing that we will never fully grasp God’s Truth and so we must respect others and the truths which they claim for themselves.

At this Confirmation session, we will begin to talk about God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit.  What are the beliefs that make us distinctively Christian?  What makes us Presbyterian?  How can we talk about God?  Who was (and is) Jesus?  What's the deal with the Holy Spirit?  We'll focus on these and many other questions.

Don't forget to bring warm clothes, we'll spend some time outside.

Session I: January 31

Great End of the Church #1: Providing nurture, community and a safe place for the children of God.

The earliest account of the church (Acts 2:42-47) describes a fellowship of believers who did far more than gather together to offer their praise to God in worship. They provided for each other, took care of one another, broke bread together, and made certain that everyone’s needs were met.  The church was a body of people committed to the well being of everyone in that body, and the church is called to be the same today.

Our first Confirmation session will focus on the life of the church.  What is the church?  How does the church operate?  Why does it do the things it does?  What does it mean to be a part of the church?  Come ready to tackle these and other questions.

Confirmation 2010

The purpose of the confirmation process is to help students discern and articulate their personal faith and to facilitate their full incorporation as members of DPC through experiences and instruction focused on Scripture, the beliefs of our faith tradition, the nature of the Church and the shape of the Christian life.

The confirmation process at DPC is undergoing some exciting changes this year.  It will no longer take place on Sunday mornings during the education hour.  Instead, it will take place on seven different Sunday evenings from 5:00 to 8:00 between January and May, listed below:

January 3 - Parent/youth workshop: "Am I Ready for Confirmation?"
January 31
February 21
March 7
March 20-21
- Retreat
March 28
April 18
May 2
May 23

In addition to changing the time, we are inviting all students who feel they are ready to take this step to be a part of the confirmation process.  We want confirmation to be understood as an important step in one's life of faith, not just a hoop one jumps through in 9th grade.  The instruction will use a dynamic combination of activities and lessons, whole-group teaching and small-group discussion, fellowship and study.  We are confident that this new format will serve to enhance the confirmation experience for DPC's young people.

The Trinity
03/01/2010 | Bryant

The Trinity is one of the most important theological commitments of the Christian church.  Imagine a faith without the Trinity.  That is to say, imagine that God is still God, that Jesus was just an [ ... ]
